It’s shaping up to be a good weekend for Boston’s geek chic crowd. With the debut of Marvel’s newest Iron Man installment and an entire day dedicated to Star Wars on the horizon, it’s shaping up to be a good weekend for Boston’s geek chic crowd.
For those who have never had any reason to associate May 4th with Star Wars before, it’s largely a day to celebrate the classic sci-fi series by enjoying the movies and battling one another with fake light sabers.
Wookiepedia explains the quasi-holiday’s origins:
“The phrase dates back to at least 1979, on the day Margaret Thatcher was elected Britain‘s first woman prime minister. Her party took out a newspaper ad in the London Evening News that said ‘May the Fourth be with you, Maggie. Congratulations.’”
Boston area celebrations include an event at the Children’s Museum for little ones, and promotional giveaways that will continue throughout the day at local LEGO stores. The Boston Public Library is participating in Free Comic Book Day. All you need to do to receive a free comic book is visit either the Charleston or Grove Hall branches.
Starwarsblog.com has announced that Executive Editor of Lucasfilm, Jonathan Rinzler, will be conducting an open online discussion with Jeffrey Brown (Brown authored the humor book, Darth Vader and Son). The virtual chat starts on the 4th, at 3 p.m. Hub time.
In a recent list by movoto.com, Boston was actually named number six on a list of America’s top 10 nerdiest cities. However dubious the distinction, it’s hard to deny the popularity of yearly events like Boston Comic Con and PAX East.
In fact, Comic Con tickets are still available for this year’s event., which was originally scheduled for mid-April. Due to the lockdown following the Boston Marathon, it will now take place during the weekend of August 3rd. So, if heading to one of the country’s largest comic conventions sounds like your cup of Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, you may be in luck.
But in case the Gargle Blaster isn’t your style, here’s a list of Star Wars themed cocktails to enjoy with friends this weekend.
May the Fourth be with you!
