You’ll find many good places that sneak under the radar, but this is the hardest one to find.Nobody goes to Medford Square just to go to Dunkies, but many go for the doughnuts. Take the bus from Davis Square to Medford Square and you’ll find many good places that sneak under the radar, but this is the hardest one to find. Tucked away between a cigar shop and a dry-cleaners, Donuts with a Difference’s storefront can be walked past in three or four steps. While the selection is not quite as expansive as you’ll find at a chain doughnut store, you’ll find the classics: jelly, chocolate dipped, Boston cream, lemon, crullers and more adorn the shelves, raised or cake style, sugared or powdered, glazed or simply plain and delicious. The lemon doughnuts are a personal favorite, with lots of tasty lemon cream. The jelly doughnuts are wonderful, filled with enough jelly for every bite but not so much that you’ll get stains on your jeans. Boston cream doughnuts have plenty of chocolate on top and cream in the middle, without those pockets of doughnut making you wonder where the filling is. The lemon doughnuts are a personal favorite, with lots of tasty lemon cream that has a little more zing and a little less sugar than other places.

Go early if you can, especially on Sundays. They do take special orders and will hold them if you make them, but pick them up before the store closes. Doughnuts are $1 each, $5 per half dozen or $9 per dozen–more than the chain stores but worth every penny. They can keep until the next day, but why wait unless you have to?
