June is finally here. This month is going to be absolutely insane for hip-hop! J. Cole, Mac Miller, Kanye West – some of the most highly anticipated projects of the year are about to drop, and all on the same day! The 18th could go down as the biggest day in rap in recent memory. Every hip-hop head is dying from the anticipation, so let’s get into some tracks to hold us over for the time being.
Mac Miller – “Objects In The Mirror”
A lot of people expressed surprise when they heard this song from Mac. But he released an EP last year entitled You, a jazz-inspired mixtape that was a complete 180 from the sound he’s known for. Many casual listeners think Mac is just a frat rapper who spits about drugs and girls, but his last project, Macadelic, certainly changed people’s perception of him as an artist. Watch out for his new album, Watching Movies With The Sound Off, set to drop June 18th. He’s been handling a good amount of his own production, so I’m expecting big things from the young MC.
J. Cole – “Niggas Know”
It’s a tough thing to admit that Cole has something to prove to audiences after his debut album, The Sideline Story, came up a little short in both sales and reception. However, he has put out a steady flow of mixtapes to keep everyone hungry for his follow-up album, Born Sinner. He continues to align himself with the likes of Kanye, producing and writing his own songs. Like two other rappers in this article, Cole’s album hits stores June 18th.
Black Hippy – “U.O.E.N.O. Remix”
Is there anyone coming up faster in the game than Black Hippy? Kendrick Lamar. Schoolboy Q. Ab-Soul. Jay Rock. They’re steadily replacing Slaughterhouse as the four-headed monster of rap. Bars, flow, swagger; they’re the complete package. Hot off the coattails of Kendrick’s GKMC, the group attacked Rocko’s popular “U.O.E.N.O.” and destroyed any other rappers’ hopes of remixing this beat. Seriously – they killed it, resurrected it, then killed it again. It probably won’t appear on Q’s Oxymoron album but it’ll certainly receive massive rotation.
Kanye West – “New Slaves”
All praise to Mr. West, hip-hop’s savior. The man with the biggest ego is poised to release his latest record on June 18th, adequately titled Yeezus. He’s been utilizing insane marketing techniques, evidenced by the above video of his massive face projected onto the sides of buildings. He was also featured in the season finale of SNL, where he played another new song, “Black Skinhead.” Should we expect anything but this kind of gaudy bravado from the king of G.O.O.D. Music? June 18th, Yeezus drops from the heavens.
Alright, that’s it for now. Keep your ears tuned to the airwaves and your eyes glued here for more fresh hip-hop!
