UPDATE: This campaign was fully funded June 27th 2103!
The visuals of Our Darker Purpose harken back to the glory days of Edward Scissorhands and even Batman Returns. There’s something about the early 90s films of Tim Burton that can never allow my opinion of the man to be sullied. Say what you will about Planet of the Apes or Alice in Wonderland, the atmosphere that he created, topped with a sprinkling of Danny Elfman genius, was something that was unlike other directors at the time or, though many have tried, since. When I stumbled upon Our Darker Purpose, an action RPG game, the visuals harkened back to the glory days of Edward Scissorhands and even Batman Returns. I was clearly pretty drawn in.
Currently being developed by Boston-based Avidly Wild Games, Our Darker Purpose follows a child named Cordy exploring the vast Edgewood Home for Lost Children as she attempts to confront the evil administration. Along the way, she encounters the myriad secrets and quirks of the home, including wild classmates and otherworldly monsters. David Roth of Avidly Wild Games mentioned that the influence in the story and visuals ranged from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and Coraline to Edward Gorey to King Lear, and it shows; not in pure imitation, but there’s a specific vibe to the game that makes each influence make sense.Additional funding could lead to further gameplay, as well as Mac and Linux ports.Currently, the game is in development for Windows only. If the Kickstarter exceeds its goal by enough of a margin, Roth said that Avidly Wild Games will consider ports for Mac and Linux (I supported just in case). Additionally, they’re looking into the possibility of hiring voice actors to add another dimension to their story. But perhaps best of all, additional funding could lead to further gameplay; more levels, more playable characters, and what have you.
The Kickstarter for Our Darker Purpose has a mere 8 days left, and as of writing has $21,007 to go. Rewards range from taking part in the beta testing to even having in-game characters based on your likeness; there’s some cool stuff here. Any fans of moody and atmospheric (but still fun!) environments in gaming and movies should immediately check out Our Darker Purpose and donate what you can to a really cool project from our own backyard.
