Local film student and talented writer for theLFB, Reuben Baron, has developed a script for a short film entitled Book Girl, which he’s hoping to submit to the New York International Children’s Film Festival.
The story focuses on “Book Girl”, as she is called, a girl who has always been an outcast. She has a physical condition which makes walking frustrating for her and feels more than anything that she was meant not to walk, but to fly. One day she meets a boy online with similar feelings, who claims he knows a wizard who can give her wings. Taking a chance on risky magic, she gets her lifelong wish, but not all is as expected…
This is Reuben’s most ambitious film project so far, an 18-minute original short film inspired by classic fairy tales (The Little Mermaid in particular) and modern cultural concerns. Kai Narita (pictured above) is an aspiring actress making her screen debut in the role of “Book Girl.” Riley Jo Harley, an experienced community theater actor, will also be making his screen debut as “TV Boy.” Kevin Lynch, guitarist for countless Boston-area bands, will be playing the Wizard and also volunteering his musical skills for the film’s score. All involved say they are “excited about the chance to make this project a reality.”
Over the next month, they hope to raise at least $1000 to go towards costume design, camera equipment, and other minor expenses. Backer rewards include credit, downloads, DVDs, and at the higher reward tiers cameos in the film and either film festival tickets or involvement in creating a DVD extra. Please give what you can and spread the word!
