Finally, a movie that is not a blockbuster that is fun and enjoyable to watch. After a long list of summer flops, 2 Guns is just the cure we need. Director Baltasar Kormakur, who gave us last year’s thriller Contraband, takes us on another thrill ride that packs plenty of action and will keep you intrigued right to the end.
2 Guns is based on a graphic novel by Steven Grant and stars Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington as Texas criminals working together to infiltrate the same cartel run by a Mexican drug lord named Papi Greco (Edward James Olmos) What each of these two men don’t realize is that they are both working undercover. Bobby (Washington) is a DEA agent while Stig (Wahlberg) is working for Navy intelligence.
Wahlberg really plays upon his charisma while Washington is magnetic as ever. Both seem to be having a lot of fun with their respective roles. The beautiful Paula Patton shows up occasionally throughout the film as Washington’s love interest. She plays a DEA agent who, while important to the plot, is underdeveloped as a character. Bill Paxton, who has the meatiest role of the movie, is deliciously fun as a merciless government agent.
Unfortunately, 2 Guns is a little over-complicated when it comes to the plot, but what makes this movie worth seeing is the pairing of Washington and Wahlberg. Their on-screen banter is both lively and spot-on.
R for violence throughout, language and brief nudity
