Don’t mistake K. Flay for another Ke$ha or Kreayshawn—girl’s got serious chops! K. Flay, a wicked smaht Stanford grad, had me at “Elle Fanning” (from her “I Stopped Caring in ‘96” EP), which sullenly waxes nostalgic and references the Backstreet Boys. And if you’re one of those people who likes “everything but rap and country,” check out the xx-sampling “Less Than Zero” or her cover of the Metric song “Lost Kitten.”
But I digress. K. Flay’s new EP, “What If It Is,” came out this week on Soundcloud and is brilliant. “Hail Mary,” which features the rapper Danny Brown, is clearly the leading single with its catchy hook and buzzy bass line, but it’s tracks like the unapologetic “So What” that grab me. K. Flay’s pretty, heartfelt songs (eg. “The Cops” on the new EP) don’t even come close to lines like “Said it was cute the way I’m empty/So I deleted every message that you sent me.” You can hear her seething. It’s masterful.
