The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare features fiery artist Clarissa Fray as her ordinary NYC heroine who discovers the unimaginable. Clary, who has lived life in New York City as an ordinary girl, with her ordinary best friend Simon Lewis, a nerdy but lovable guy, sees a horrifying event take place in a club she frequents.
It turns out that there is a whole new layer to the world surrounding Clary- a supernatural layer. Clary and Simon meet the Lightwoods, a family of Shadowhunters. Shadowhunters, a race of demon hunters created by the angel Raziel, work in the shadows to prevent demons from overrunning humanity.
The first novel, City of Bones is being adapted to film and is scheduled for release on August 21, 2013. Lily Collins has been cast as Clarissa Fray, and her love interest Jace Wayland is played by Jamie Campbell Bower. The film looks as action-packed as the novels, focusing heavily on the demon-fighting aspect of the story and downplaying the teenagers in love storyline.
Although Clary and Jace have a palpable attraction to one another throughout the novel, the pair also kick butt and travel through both ordinary and supernatural New York on a journey of self discovery. Even if you haven’t read City of Bones, the movie looks exciting, and is perfect for satisfying your fantasy film craving before the school year starts.
Will the film be true to the novel? Is that important? What do you think?
