Spoiler alert, obviously (for Breaking Bad and Freaks and Geeks in this article, likely more shows in the comments).
So Breaking Bad is over, and with it a lot of “best ending ever” comments. Is Felina the best final episode ever? I’m curious about the difference between how it plays to someone who’s been watching the show for years and for someone like me, who went through the series online over the course of a couple months before finally catching up in time for the finale. As it is, I found the ending satisfying, a fitting wrap-up to the series with a few amazing scenes (Badger and Skinny Pete with laser pointers, Walt’s one moment of honesty with Skylar, the car-gun). Watching it the day after I watched Ozymandias and the day of watching Granite State I was expecting something a bit more emotionally scarring, so I was surprised how relatively subdued it was, and how otherwise not so surprising (yet still completely appropriate for the series) it ended up being (again, I wonder how this plays to those who’ve had longer breaks between episodes). I don’t know if I’d say it’s my favorite ending of all time. It might be one of the most fitting, though.
My personal favorite last episode of a TV series? Oddly enough, it’s from a show many feel ended too soon. Freaks and Geeks certainly deserved to be more successful at the time than it was, yet considering they had to end it after one year, Discos and Dragons turned out to be a perfect send-off to the show. The show began with Lindsay struggling with family and trying to fit in with the burnouts ends with her finding independence from both groups, hopeful for a future with new friends and new adventures. Combined with the Dungeons and Dragons storyline that finds James Franco’s freak also achieving a second chance among the geeks, it’s possibly the best series finale I’ve ever seen. It would have been great had Judd Apatow been able to continue the show for longer than it lasted, but if it had to end when it did, it ended the best way possible.
