Halloween’s almost here, so what better time to read about mind-boggling alien terrors, mysterious cultists, and true love at a Pumpkin Ball?
Awoken, the first novel in the Viridian Saga by Serra Elinsen, is the hottest new release in the ever-popular paranormal romance genre. We’ve seen sexy vampires, sexy werewolves, even sexy zombies before, but never before has someone published a book about sexy Cthulu. You read that right, folks; Awoken transforms the mythos of H.P. Lovecraft into a high school love story.
Blasphemy, some must be thinking. But Elinsen, a mother of five and devoted Reform Anaprotestant, has spent much effort doing research to make sure her book fits in with the world of that classic, somewhat mad horror innovator. In particular, the character of Uncle Neil and his awesome, frustratingly incomplete stories serve to flesh out a universe beyond the central romance. Both Lovecraft and paranormal romance books tend to embrace a certain level of purple prose anyway, so the mash-up ends up making a strange amount of sense.
If you’re a fan of Twilight, read this book. It has everything you love about Twilight. Now, if you’re like me and you hate Twilight, I still recommend you read this book. I’m not saying Elinsen’s actually a fake and this is really an ingenious piece of satire subtly mocking a genre that’s already a parody of itself, BUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT…
