A new Adult Swim original cartoon that’s actually worth watching!?! A rare occurrence indeed, but this week saw the premiere of Rick and Morty, a wild new show co-created by Dan Harmon (while he was fired from season 4 of Community) and Justin Roiland (known as the voice of Lemongrab on Adventure Time and also playing both of his new show’s main characters). A full half-hour sitcom with a solidly established family dynamic, it’s got more plot substance than your Aqua Teens or Robot Chickens, but it’s got that sense of anarchy Adult Swim at their best has that makes for more exciting viewing than your increasingly generic Seth McFarlane junk. The set-up of a loser kid on adventures with an elderly mad scientist recalls a mix of Back to the Future and Sherman and Mr. Peabody, but the closest comparison for the show’s dark yet still somewhat heartfelt style is Futurama, though this is a few more screws unhinged. The first episode is streaming from now until next Monday; new episodes will regularly air Mondays at 10:30 PM. I saw a preview of the second episode at New York Comic Con, which with a clever Inception spoof and a canine world domination plot, promises the show isn’t going to lose steam from the pilot.
