Since launching the Boston Scally Co. back in September 2013, Mike hopes his brand will continue to grow steadily in the years to come. He is definitely pursuing his dreams of bringing the ‘scally’ cap back as a staple of American fashion – especially in his hometown of Boston.
SD: How did Boston Scally Co. begin?
MA: I always wanted to design/create a brand that belonged to the people of Boston. We have our sports teams, but I wanted to design something that truly depicted us as a city. The people of Boston are tough, humble, and hard-working and I wanted to give them something that they could embrace.
SD: What is the philosophy and main inspiration for your scally caps?
MA: It is really about the way I was raised. I grew up in a very blue collar family. All my family members were all very hard-working, like most Bostonians. What I love about Boston is that is made up of many different cities with people from different cultures and personalities. You have people who are edgy, rough, and comical, but all down to earth. The designs and brand of my caps are all about capturing what makes Boston and its people so great. I believe this is a brand that I can share with not just Boston, but people everywhere.
SD: Who would you most like to see wearing one of your scally caps?
MA: Everyone! (he says with a chuckle) If we are talking celebrities it would have to be Mark Wahlberg, the Dropkick Murphys, or any Bruins players. They definitely fit the profile or feel of what our designs mean. I do know that former boxer Mickey Ward wears one, but really anyone. I am always very grateful every time a cap is purchased.
SD: Who has influence you as a designer?
MA: I like Hanna Hats. They are made over in Donegal, Ireland. Their designs are timeless. Another of my favorite is Goorin brothers. I love their Gatsby style hats.
SD: Any plans to branch out beyond scally caps and t-shirts?
MA: Absolutely! One of our goals is to be very intimate with my customers. I want to know what they like and what they don’t. I am always looking for feedback since they are the one purchasing and wearing our products. Any new item that we sell I do it slowly, because I want to make sure it is going to sell and that people are going to buy them because they like it.
