In celebration of July being “National Ice Cream Month,” Sean Greenwood, the Grand Poobah of P.R. of Ben & Jerry’s, took some time to chat about the legendary ice cream makers.
SD: What is the key element to Ben & Jerry’s success?
SG: That is an hour-long answer (he laughs). Ben & Jerry always did things differently from the very beginning. They were much more than just making funky & chunky ice cream.
SD: How does Ben & Jerry’s create and then pick its flavors?
SG: There is a process, but it can sometimes take up to a year to put a new flavor on the shelves. The flavor gurus work all year long to make them. They do “Trend Treks” and hit different restaurants around the US to see what is hot right now in desserts. The name of the flavor is also very important.
SD: Why was it so important that Ben & Jerry give back and become socially responsible?
SG: It is core to our DNA. They did not want to take advantage of people and make an unhealthy profit. They want to share with the community their successes. The employees are also big on sharing the successes of the company.
SD: What’s your favorite flavor?
SG: Undoubtedly, it is Cherry Garcia! I have loved that flavor for the last 25 years.
SD: What is the best part of being part of the Ben & Jerry’s team?
SG: When you realize what you do together as a business and see the impact you have, there is no greater feeling. When we are all working together, it is truly amazing what we can do as a company.
