Who saw the Wisin, J. Lo, and Ricky Martin performance of “Adrenalina” (“Adrenaline”) on Premios Juventud (The Young People’s Awards) on Univision last Thursday at 8PM PST? The big surprise was that though Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin were scheduled to perform, they didn’t make it. They hologrammed it in, which, in this case, was worse than phoning it in.
Only Wisin was actually present. It is his song. Well, there’s a Ricky Martin Spanglish version, too. It’s all a bit confusing, but not as confusing as this performance. Too bad, too, because it’s a hot song and it would have been nice to have seen all three performers live.
The song has been out awhile. It was the third and final single from Wisin’s El Regreso del Sobreviviente (The Return of the Survivor). The American media didn’t give it much press, but this is a big deal in the Latino music world. These are three superpowers getting together on a song. It’s gone to Number 2 on both the US Hot Latin Songs and US Latin Pop Songs on the Billboard Charts.
With Michael Jackson’s hologram performing “Slave to the Rhythm“ at the 2014 Billboard Awards back in May it made more sense. Though the jury is still out on whether this was creepy or visionary, the King of Pop is dead! These two are alive and kicking and could have gotten off their bums, gotten them on a plane, and made it out to Miami. It comes off like a huge copout.
Seems like a case of technology for technology’s sake. Though there were some nice fade in and fade out transitions, there was no real impetus for the performance. With MJ, it was about a posthumous first single from a new record (Xscape) and the first post-death performance. So, there was some fanfare around it. And, at least the Mike Jack simulacrum did dance choreography as would be expected from the real legend. These holograms just stood there for the most part dancing very little while standing in place. Could it there’s a limitation to the technology? Jennifer does some choreography including some twerking in the video. It would have been nice to have seen how low her hologram could have gotten. This performance is rated an EPIC FAIL.
