“Everything’s Coming Up Roses” at the Stoneham Theatre!
Rita McKenzie brings her long-running one-woman show to the Stoneham Theatre. Mckenzie’s tribute to the “Queen of Broadway”, Ethel Merman, is a nostalgic and biographical journey that is told in songs from many of her Broadway roles.
As interesting as her personal life was, the show is ultimately all about the music. It was George Gershwin who jumpstarted her career with “Girl Crazy”, Cole Porter (“my real love — strictly platonic”) who gave Merman five shows, and Irving Berlin, provided her with her longest running show, “Annie Get Your Gun.”
Just like Merman’s brassy voice, Kenzie can be heard all the way up to the rafters and beyond. Not only does she have the voice, she has the stage presence that demands respect.
But ultimately, Ethel Merman’s Broadway is all about the music –“I Got Rhythm”,” Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries”, and “Anything Goes” among the songs she belts out.
You better do some vocal warm-ups because Mckenzie invites the crowd to sing along to Berlin’s “There’s No Business Like Show Business.”
Ethel Merman’s Broadway is simple, fun, and elegant.
