This week marks the official start of the 2014-15 TV season. Each day this week I’ll be summarizing that night’s new and returning shows. Season premieres of returning shows tend to be somewhat staggered; not all are coming back this week. And just as a reminder, the CW waits until October to launch both its new and returning shows.
NCIS: New Orleans (9-10:01 pm, CBS)
There they go again, spinning off another iteration of this very successful franchise. The cast includes Scott Bakula, Lucas Black, Zoe McLellan, and CCH Pounder. (For those who may be wondering, NCIS: LA is moving to Mondays at 10 pm starting next week.)
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (9-10 pm, ABC)
Coulson’s team is still trying to take down HYDRA, but is now forced to operate underground. New cast members include Lucy Lawless as a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and Adrianne Palicki as Mockingbird.
NCIS (8-9 pm, CBS)
Original recipe, for the purists.
Person of Interest (10:01-11 pm, CBS)
This is one of those shows that is just too involved to watch only occasionally, but regular viewers have been rewarded with a complex and richly rendered world that’s increasingly, and frighteningly, similar to the one we live in. There are now two super-powerful artificial intelligence surveillance systems operating, but with somewhat different purposes. The team members are in hiding from the government’s all-seeing eye and living under false identities.
Chicago Fire (10-11 pm, NBC)
At the end of last season there was an explosion and building collapse; I’m guessing someone doesn’t make it.
