Neil Diamond may be promoting his newest album, Melody Road, while on tour but his fans will have nothing to worry about, he will perform all his old favorites when he comes to the TD North Garden on March 23rd.
SD: Why new music and why tour now?
ND: Honestly, it is what I do. It is built into my genetic code. When I finish a new album, I’m literally starting all over again the next day. I love to tour, especially when I have a new album being released. I never tire of the excitement of the music and the fans.
SD: Upbeat and romantic music/sounds seemed to influence your new album, Melody Road. Did the fact that you recently got married play into the sound of this album?
ND: I did not intentionally write songs that are romantic. I just wrote what came out of me at the time. Reflecting on my music and songwriting process, I can tell where my head was at each point in my life. I got married 3 years ago and that did have some effect on this album. Every album that I have written is based on each journey that I have taken at different times in my life. Life holds all kinds of wonderful and mysterious surprises and I want them to reflect that in my music.
SD: How has touring changed since you first began over 45 years ago?
ND: When I started, it was just me and a guitar, now I have 45 people to keep me company. Other than that, it is not a lot different. For me, it has always been about the show. I love that the fans are always there for me and that they keep coming back – new and old ones.
SD: This is a big tour, how do you recharge during the tour?
ND: Since I just turned 74 years old, my goal was to perform at least 74 shows on this tour. As I perform, I don’t wear down, I get stronger. I am in good health and my voice is as strong as ever. After the dust settled, I looked back on the number of shows and realized what an undertaking it was going to be. I feel that I am still young enough to take on the challenges of it.
SD: Coming to Boston must be still a big deal for you?
ND: I have had a long relationship with Boston. I am looking forward to it. It is exciting to be out doing shows no matter what city I am in. I love Boston! I want to make sure the audience has as much fun as legally possible.
