Glee’s favorite villain is bringing her singing voice to the Wilbur on Friday, April 24th, for the Women in Comedy Festival. Please leave your slushies at home!
SD: Sue was my favorite character on Glee. What has the journey of playing icon Sue Sylvester been like?
JL: It was the first solid job that I had that lasted longer than a minute. Her voice resonated with me so much. We were definitely from the same wheelhouse. I was fascinated by her qualities or lack of them. Plus, I loved wearing the tracksuit [Laughs]. It was like waking up and going to work in your pajamas.
SD: How did you get involved with the Women in Comedy Festival?
JL: My booker found it and I thought it was a great thing especially for women to showcase their talents. Plus, my friend, Jill Soloway, the creator of Amazon’s series Transparent was a connection for me to WICF.
SD: The WICF is about brining women and men from all walks of comedy together. What will your part be?
JL: I’m singing! This really gives me a reason to sing a couple of my favorite songs from Broadway to cabaret. Kate Flannery of “The Office” will be joining me on stage. Along with Kate will be a five-piece band. It is going to be an hour and half of singing and goofing around. I promise you, you will leave with a smile on your face.
SD: You’ve become a role model in the LGBT community; do you think it’s more acceptable to be out in Hollywood or does it depend on gender?
JL: I don’t think gender plays a part, but I do think it has gotten easier. There have been so many actors who have had the courage to stand-up and say,“this is who I am.” Acceptance is important, and not just as an orientation but on a human being level. We need more love and tolerance in the world!
SD: Can you tell us anything about your new CBS pilot “Angel From Hell?”
JL: I’m shooting it now. I am playing the guardian angel and best friend to Maggie Lawson. It also stars Kevin Pollak.
